Winthrop has been a lifelong member of the Milford community. He graduated from Milford High School and later attended Milford Prepatory School. Winthrop began his college career at Yale University in New Haven and transfered after his sophmore year to Colby College in Maine where he obtained his degree in Geology. Winthrop obtained his degree in Mortuary Science from McAllister School of Embalming Magna Cum Laude. In 1961 he joined the family firm and later purchased the funeral home in 1981. Winthrop served as a state senator from 1972 -1974 and has also acted as a past Police Commissioner and past chairman of the police commission and constable. He has also served as a past president of the Milford Chamber of Commerce. Winthrop has stayed active in the Milford community as is charter and lifetime member of the Milford Land Trust. He is a past Eagle Scout and Scout Master for Troop 1 BSA. He is a member of the Milford Elks, Rotary, and past president of the Milford JCs and also a life member of the Applaachian Trail Conservancy. Win is also a 45 year member of Ansantawae Lodge #89 AF&AM. He also served as one of the orginal five tree commissioners and charter member of Milford Trees Inc., and life member of the NRA. Winthrop also serves as the treasurer for the Milford High School All Class Reunion Commitee. Winthrop has also purchased and help plant all of the elm trees located on the Milford green. Winthrop married his wife Bonnie in 1993 and they currently own and operate Smith Funeral Home together. In his spare time he enjoys outdoors activities and spending time with his family. Winthrop is a member of the Milford Congregational Church. |

Dan is a 1980 Graduate of American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York and is commemorating his 30th year of caring for families as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He obtained his Certified Funeral Service Practitioner status (CFSP) from The Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice in 2005. This achievement signifies a commitment to raise and improve the professional standards of funeral service practice and to pursue life-long learning. He had also served on the ethics committee of the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association and was a practical embalming examiner for the State of Connecticut Department of Health. You may know or remember him from Saint Mary Church , Milford Fine Arts Council, Board of the former Milford-Orange YMCA, Member of the Milford Cemetery Association, St Agnes Parish, Pyramid Shriners, Ansantawae Lodge No. 89, A.F. & A.M., Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Fellowcraft Association , Notary Public, Friends of Beth-El , Milford Elk's or the Patriot Guard Riders. Recently, he was appointed to serve the City of Milford on the Veterans Graves Preservation Commission from 2008 through 2010 .
